DESIRE
"Delight yourself in
the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." - Psalm
37:4. Desires are the "Keys to the Kingdom". The Hawaiian and
Japanese culture might say desires are the Ki to life, the
energy of life and divine intervention. As children we perceive
this energy very clearly. As a child your perceptions have not been
clouded by the "big" things in adult life. Kids are not as
cognitively developed as grown-ups. To the adult this lack of
mental ability seems to be a disadvantage. However, it is really a
problem for those of us grown-ups who have lost the clarity of
childhood. It has our deficiency rather than their disadvantage.
"Truly I say to you that unless you turn and become like children,
you will never enter the Kingdom the Heaven." Matthew 18:3.
This last scripture was the favorite quote of St. Therese. She
called the "being as a little child, the little way". She felt that
the way to lead a truly spiritual life did not require enormity in
spiritual acts. She believed that to be truly spiritual one must
follow their heart's desire and maintain the "little way" in their
every day activities. St. Therese or as she is lovingly known "the
little flower" received her sainthood for following her heart's
desire. She accepted the energy of her desires as divine
interventions. She followed so greatly her desire to be a nun that
she asked the Pope himself if he might intercede and bend the rules
allowing her to enter a convent at the age of 15. This was an
extraordinary act in the late 1800's.
St. Therese made a conscious decision to be a saint and she decided
that she would do this by following "the little way." What St.
Therese did was to choose to live outside her ego as very young
children often do. She didn't ignore her desire to be a saint and
was therefore able to bypass her ego and avoid self sabotage. This
allowed her to take the steps she needed to reach sainthood and
fulfill her heart's desire.
God gives us desires to guide us in finding and following our life
path. Basically we blow off all this celestial intervention to be
our "adult" self. We have come to see and think that desires are
illogical and only belong in childhood. By doing this we have
killed our passion and stifled our creativity. We have caused
ourselves to lead flat and malcontented lives. The solution to this
dissatisfaction is to take on the little way and follow your
desires.
To jump start the reclaiming of our childhood powers, do something
you would have done as a kid. Maybe this means jumping off a pier
into a lake over and over and over, and maybe this means playing a
game of "ghost in the graveyard" or "statue", coloring or dress-up
can be effective too! How about doing anything just for the pure
joy of experiencing it? These simple pleasures will take you out of
the mundane big person's world you have become trapped in and lead
you back to yourself and straight to your heart's desire. |
